As we are aware about the pandemic the world is facing right now and the only way to curb the spread of the virus as per WHO guide lines is staying indoors and practicing social distancing. So naturally the car which you own would be idle and maintaining it won’t be on top of your minds. As it is stated “You take care of your car, the car will take care of you!”.
Here are our 8 tips regarding how to maintain your car to your best during these tough times to avoid firing our bills up post lockdown.
Usage of a car cover:
Use a car cover for cleanliness. It would ensure no moisture is left inside and evaporate it faster.
Preventing Battery Discharge:
Car batteries discharge over time and the only way to prevent it is to keep the vehicle running which is impossible in this period. So we would suggest you crank up the engine and keep the car idle for atleast 5 to 10 mins once a week. This would stop the battery from going dead.
Avoiding Flat Spots:
If the car sits idle for long time it may develop flat spots on the tyres which would result in improper braking in future. So we would suggest to move the car forward and backwards for a couple of inches which can prevent the appearing of flat spots.
Avoid extended use of handbrake:
Engaging the handbrake over an extended period of time would result into brake pads getting stuck to the discs and drums. Alternatively to stop this, you can use the layman’s method of keeping sizable stones behind rear wheels to stop the car rolling.
Cleaning the Interior:
Clean the interiors of the car using any sanitizer or disinfectant available at your house. This will kill all the bacterias present inside the car.
Filling up the fuel tank upto the brim:
Filling the fuel tank upto it’s full capacity and also adding fuel additives (optional) ensures in longitivity of the fuel. This aids in reduction in condensation due to weather fluctuations.
Checking the Engine oil:
Maintain adequate level of engine oil and coolant levels in the car.
Preventing Rodent Infestation:
Keeping a car parked idle for a long period. This gives rise to rodent infestation which is harmful for vehicle’s health. Look for signs such as food items, plastics inside your car which are the indicators. Use repellents while parking the car for a long period of time.
After the lockdown ends, send your car for proper service so as to avoid any further complications. Many companies such as Hyundai Motors India have extended warranty period and are offering free servicing once this lockdown ends.
